Operating Session

Once a month we hold a formal Operating Session. To an increasing number of model railroaders, realistic operation of the model railroad is the ultimate goal of the hobby. It is the realistic movement of freight cars and trains in a systematic manner by performing several of the more interesting jobs handled by professional railroaders.

We use a digital command control (DCC) radio controlled system which makes it easy to follow a train throughout the railroad.  We haven't found the need for a fast clock however we do use a computer software  called RailOp which generates switch lists that our operators follow to complete their assignments.

We find that two-man crews per train work well. This also allows a "rookie" operator to work along side a more experienced railroader. We also use Yardmasters who handle all movements within their freight yard and of course we have a Dispatcher who sees to it that the whole railroad runs smoothly.

The main purpose of the Operating Sessions is to provide our members with another phase of model railroading and to have fun.

Here is our Dispatcher Larry Morton controlling an operating session.  He is in another room from the operating layout. He uses the radio to communicate with yard operators and train operators who are some distance away and out of sight, just like the prototype railroads.
